BUILDING A SAFER FUTURE: SENSITIZATION AND CIVIC EDUCATION ON THE NATIONAL BUILDING CODE 2024.
The construction industry in Kenya is set to undergo significant changes with the introduction of the National Building Code 2024. This new code aims to enhance the standards of construction, ensuring safety, sustainability, and efficiency in building practices. The National Construction Authority (NCA) has launched a countrywide sensitization and civic education program on the National Building Code 2024. This initiative aims to enhance understanding, promote compliance, and ensure a safer, more sustainable construction practices.
The Authority has commenced the first phase of these sensitization and civic education forums, with the inaugural having being held at the Bomas of Kenya on Monday, 10 th March 2025. These forums are designed to empower all stakeholders, including but not limited to professionals, contractors, and the public, with the knowledge required to implement and apply the Code effectively. These efforts will foster a culture of compliance and excellence, minimizing structural failures and enhancing public confidence in Kenya’s construction sector.
During the first sensitization forum held at the Bomas of Kenya, the Board Chairperson of the Authority, Adv. Mercy Okiro, FCIArb said that the implementation of the National Building Code 2024 will transform how construction is carried out in the country, by providing for an up-to-date framework and standards for planning, design, approval, implementation, maintenance, and demolition of buildings.
The Authority`s Executive Director, Eng. Maurice Akech, MBS added that collaboration and partnership are key to successful implementation of the Code. He urged all stakeholders, especially the county governments to utilize this new Building Code during review of applications for construction approvals, in order to uphold compliance and quality assurance within the country.
These programs aim to provide stakeholders in both local and urban governments with knowledge and skills necessary for upholding construction standards. The phase one of the county sensitization programs embarked within the week, starting from Uasin-Gishu and Garissa counties on 11 th March, Isiolo and Kitui on 12th March, Kakamega on 13 th March, Embu, Kisumu and Kajiado on 14 th March,2025 respectively.
In Uasin Gishu county, Hon. Edward Sawe, CECM for Lands, Physical Planning, and Housing and Urban Development represented H.E Dr. Jonathan Bii, EGH, at the forum. Uasin Gishu County Commissioner, Dr. Eddyson H. Nyale and NCA North Rift Regional Coordinator QS Lucas Adwera were also present. In Garissa, the Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Sebastian Okiring graced the occasion whose speakers included Public Works Ag. Chief Architect Arch. David Waititu and NCA Coast Regional Coordinator, Eng. Raphael Mwenga.The engagements brought together key stakeholders to discuss compliance, safety, and sustainable construction practices.
The Kitui forum was led by the Regional Coordinator for the Lower Eastern Region, Arch. Cyprian Kiprop, alongside the Coast Regional Coordinator, Eng. Raphael Mwenga. Presentations on various aspects of the code were delivered by Public Works Ag. Chief Architect, Arch. David Waititu, Mr. Joseph Ptoo, Mr. Kendrix Wandera, and Eng. Gilbert Terer. In Isiolo County, the Deputy County Commissioner, Mr. Christopher Siele, graced the forum, with the NCA team led by the Upper Eastern Regional Coordinator, Eng. Eric Okello. The presentations covered key aspects of the Building Code, including its Introduction and Explanatory Notes, External and Internal Layout of Buildings, Materials and Elements, Structural Design and Associated Works, Quality and Wellness in Buildings, Internal and External Service Systems, and Safety Considerations for both Interior and Exterior Spaces
The public is urged to take advantage of these opportunities and attend the events, to be empowered with knowledge and skills necessary for upholding construction standards. The successful implementation of these National Building Code 2024 will depend on widespread awareness and adherence to its regulations. The National Construction Authority remains committed to fostering a culture of compliance and excellence, ensuring a safer built environment for all Kenyans.
