NCA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ATTENDS THE LAUNCH OF NOVUM CONCERETE PRODUCTS IN SYOKIMAU, MACHAKOS COUNTY.

NCA Executive Director Eng. Maurice Akech, MBS, attended the launch of Novum Concrete Ltd on 8th October 2024 in Syokimau. The event was graced by Chief Guest Arch. James Gitoho of Triad Architects, alongside National Housing Corporation Managing Director Qs. David Mathu, Kenya Bureau of Standards Director for Standards Development and Trade, Mr. Zachariah Lukurito, and various architects, engineers, suppliers, and financiers. Eng. Akech was accompanied by the General Manager for Research, Training, and Capacity Building, Dr. Chrispus Ndinyo; Manager for Research and Capacity Building, Dr. Eng. Meshack Oduor; Manager for Corporate Communications, Ms. Wangui Kabala; and Manager for Compliance, Arch. Stephen Mwilu, among other officers from the Authority.

In his remarks, Eng. Akech underscored the timeliness of the launch, which coincided with the introduction of the National Building Code 2024. The new code sets out regulations to promote order, health, and safety in construction, with a particular focus on ensuring that building materials meet specified quality standards. Part V of the code mandates that all construction materials should be appropriately prepared and installed for their intended use, reinforcing the importance of Novum Concrete’s product offering.

He further noted that this is a great addition to the sector, especially in relation to locally produced concrete products that streamline construction processes, ensuring consistency, efficiency, and quality in the final constructed product.

The analysis of building failure causes, as revealed by the National Construction Authority (NCA) 2020 report, highlights that poor workmanship is the leading factor, accounting for 35% of cases, followed by substandard materials at 28% and inadequate structural design at 25%. Non-compliance with statutory and safety requirements (9%) and inadequate maintenance (3%) also contribute to building failures. These findings underscore the importance of quality assurance at every stage of the construction process, from design to material selection and execution. Ensuring high standards at all levels is critical to reducing structural failures and promoting safer, longer-lasting buildings.

In this context, Chief Guest Arch. Gitoho reiterated the need for personal integrity, professionalism, and ethics as crucial factors to combat incidences of building collapses and the rise of unqualified individuals in the construction industry.

The launch of Novum Concrete Ltd’s locally produced concrete products, particularly ready-mix concrete, is a significant development in the construction sector. Ready-mix concrete enhances efficiency by minimizing on-site preparation time, ensuring consistency in quality, and improving the speed of construction projects.

The company’s adherence to ISO 9001:2015 certification standards further emphasizes its commitment to quality, which is vital in addressing the issues outlined in the NCA report. As the construction industry continues to grow, innovations like ready-mix concrete are essential in promoting higher standards and reducing the risk of building failures. This initiative underscores the Authority’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly and locally produced concrete products to meet construction needs efficiently.
